Portrait of a Savior VI

Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church

Colossians 1:18

  1. Headship is source, origin, leader, and ruler.
    1. Beginning - The church has its existence in Christ.
      1. He is the “Author and Finisher” of faith.
    2. Head – The church is moved by every impulse that flows from Jesus.
      1. I Corinthians 2:16 - 16For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.
    3. First born from the dead – The church follows Jesus as the illustrious forerunner of the resurrected victorious.
    4. Preeminence – The church follows Christ as ultimate head over all.
      1. I Corinthians 15:25 - For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.
  2. We are baptized into His body, the church.
    1. I Corinthians 12:12-13 - 12For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.   13For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
  3. As head He determines our purpose in the church.
    1.  Who you are is determined by the will of God by grace, not in natural ability or lack thereof.
      1. Romans 12:6a - Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly
      2. I Corinthians 12:4-7, 11 - 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.
6There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.
7But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good….But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
  4. Application
    1. Based on this truth we want to elevate Jesus Christ to the place of prominence in our daily life.
      1. Practice following Him as a sheep follows a shepherd.
      2. A daily recognition of Christ’s headship in your life
    2. There is a key to recognizing the direction of Christ in your life every day.
      1. Romans 12:1-2 - Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
    3. Based on this truth we have a very important role to play in the body of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
      1. Stop making excuses
