Portrait of a Savior IV

Colossians 1:15, 19

  1. Jesus Christ is the perfect visible manifestation of the invisible God.
    1. He is the “image”
    2. Hebrews 1:1-3 - 1God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high
      1. “Radiance of His glory” – He is not a reflection. He is the glory of the Father as heat and light are the glory of the sun.
      2. “Exact representation…..nature” – The Father and the Son are exactly alike. (as a signet ring is pressed into the wax)
        1. John 12:44 - 44And Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, does not believe in Me but in Him who sent Me. 45“He who sees Me sees the One who sent Me
        2. John 14:9 - Jesus said* to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? *He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
  2. Jesus is the most glorious of all revelations of God.
    1. Hebrews 1:1-2a - 1God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2in these last days has spoken to us in His Son…..
      1. General Revelation speaks of God.
        1. Psalm 19:1 - The heavens are telling of the glory of God;     And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands
        2. Romans 1:20 - 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
      2. Specific Revelation (scripture) reveals God and leads us to faith.
        1. Romans 1:14-17 - How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 15How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”
16However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”
17So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
      3. Jesus Christ is our glimpse at God’s face, who safely leads us into His presence (intimacy).
        1.  John 14:18 - 18“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.   19“After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also.   20“In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you
        2. I Corinthians 2:16 - For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.
        3. Colossians 1:27 - to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory
  3. Summary
    1. General Revelation points to God.
    2. Specific Revelation leads us to God by faith.
    3. Jesus Christ makes us one with God. (intimacy)
