Portrait of a Savior

The scope of messages thus far at Aydelotte

  • Building on the realization that Christ saves us by grace in order to transform us into a glorious bride with the result of revealing His glory to the world. (“That the world may know…”)
  • Building the understanding that God has called each one of us to be proclaimers of this glorious truth.
  • Building a deep understanding of our standing in Christ.

Here are the goals of this message:

  1. That each of us will understand that what matters in life is not who we were, who we are, or what we can accomplish by our own strength, but God who is everything and Jesus Christ who brings us safely into His glory (humility)
  2. That each of us understands that our faith is the power of God that causes us to trust Him and that He is determined to prove to us its quality

Colossians 1:1-12

  1. Paul was who he was by the will of God.
    1. Romans 1:1 - Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God
    2. I Corinthians 1:1 - Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother
    3. Galatians 1:1 - 1Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead)
    4. I Corinthians 3:5-7 - What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth.
7So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.
  2. Faith is a glorious gift worthy of thanksgiving.
    1. It is our assurance that we will dwell with Christ forever and the power of God that will guide us through life.
      1. Ephesians 2:8 - For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
      2. I Peter 1:3-5 - born again to a living hope…to obtain an inheritance…who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
      3.  II Peter1:1 - To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours…
  3. Faith is the precious gift of God that must be tested (proved) in the life of the receiver in order for it be fully realized (that we not take it for granted). ANALOGY OF MY EXPERIENCE WITH ROCK CLIMBING AND REPELLING (Learning to trust the equipment and doing things I thought were crazy)
    1. I Peter 1:6-9 - In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,
      7so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
8and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9obtaining as the outcome of £your faith the salvation of your souls.
    2. James 1:2-4 - 2Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
4And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
  4. The tests of God are varied.
    1. Sometimes God asks us to experience exertion, sweat, blood, and tears. In these times is tempting to take credit for ourselves. But we must remember that the victory is God’s.
      1. Exodus 17:8-13
    2. Sometimes God does the miraculous with us doing little more than saying a prayer.
      1. II Kings 19:10-19, 35-37
  5. Application
    1. You are who you are by the will of God.
    2. Your faith is the power of God worthy of testing and thanksgiving.
    3. God’s tests will not be predictable.
