Portrait of a Savior II

Introduction

We have reduced Christianity to a set of moral standards (values). Therefore, we have been able to delude ourselves into thinking that if we adhere to the “moral standard” we are pleasing to God. We are good. We are Christian. This, however, is not a point of view based in truth. A true Christian is one who has been joined again to God by faith in the blood shed by Christ on the cross. So what is a Christian? A Christian is one who has is joined eternally to his Creator.

Colossians 1:3, 9-12

  1. Faith has made the Colossian believers partakers of the blessings of God.
    1. “By grace you have been saved through faith….”(Eph. 2:8)
    2. “But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” (Eph. 4:13)
    3. 9But you are a chosen race, A royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
      10for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” (I Peter 2:9-10)
  2. Connection with God equals true knowledge.
    1.  “17So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind  18being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;      20But you did not learn Christ in this way,   21if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus  22that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit  23and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind  24and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. ” (Ephesians 4:17-18, 21-23)
    2. “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance” (I Peter 1:14)
  3. Application
    1. If you have trusted in a “Christian moral standard” to bring you into good standing with God, then you have been deceived.
    2. Choose not to walk in ignorance. Learn of God each day.
    3. Realize each day that you belong to God.
      1. 19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?   20For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” (I Cor. 6:19-20)
