John 15:1-11

  1. Three results of abiding
    1. Bearing fruit (vss. 2, 4-5, 8, 16)
    2. Answered prayer (vss. 7, 16)
      1. Answered is a heart that learns to lean upon God. It is a heart that finds its pleasure and solace in the will of God.

Giving It Up to God (from: The Quotable Spurgeon)

But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:6

He fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. Job 1:20-22

The habit of resignation is the root of peace. A godly child had a ring given him by his mother, and he greatly prized it. But he suddenly and unhappily lost his ring, and he cried bitterly. Recollecting himself, he stepped aside and prayed. His sister laughingly said to him, “What is the good of praying about a ring—will praying bring back your ring?” “No, sister,” said he, “perhaps not, but praying has done this for me: it has made me quite willing to do without the ring, if it is God’s will. And is not that almost as good as having it?” Thus faith quiets us by resignation, as a babe is hushed in his mother’s bosom. Faith makes us quite willing to do without the mercy which once we prized; and when the heart is content to be without the outward blessing, it is as happy as it would be with it, for it is at rest.

  1. Fullness of joy (v. 11)
    1. Psalm 16:11 - You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.
    2. Hebrews 12:2 - 2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
    3. Colossians 1:15-22 - 15And He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
16For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
17He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
18He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.
19For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,
20and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.
21And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds,
22yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—
  1. “Abiding”
    1. Connected to Jesus like a live branch is connected to the tree
      1. Have you ever tried to pull a mature branch off a tree without a saw? It is tedious and messy.
    2. Three key forms of abiding
      1. Relational communion (prayer)
        1. John 14:16-17 -  16“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;   17that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
        2. Galatians 4:6 -  6Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
        3. Romans 8:15-16 - 15For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
16The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God
      2. Instructive communion (scripture meditation)
        1. Psalm 1
        2. II Timothy 3:16-17 - 16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
      3. Surrendered communion (obedience)
        1. John 14:15, 21, 23
        2. John 15:10
        3. I John 5:3 -    3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
  2. Application
    1. Your life is hid with God in Christ Jesus. Seek Him with all your heart.
    2. Practice the three keys of abiding.
    3. Follow the passions gained from communion with Jesus.
