Love or Legalism

Galatians 6 with 5:13-15, 26

The Spirit brings with Him the love of God. Romans 5:5b says, “the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” He causes us to live by the standard of love not works. Love motivates us to live according to the will of God and to reach out to our brothers and sisters in support. Legalism causes us to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. Legalism causes us to place heavy burden on our brothers and sisters. Notice the effects of the Spirit in Ephesians.

  1. Be filled with the Spirit.
    1. Ephesians 5:18-20
      1. Speaking to one another of the love of God and for each other
  2. Spirit filled submission
    1. To one another (5:21)
    2. Husbands and wives (5:22-33)
    3. Parents and children (6:1-4)
    4. Slaves and masters (6:5-9)

Now look at the contrast of love and legalism in Galatians 6.

  1. Legalism lords it over for fleshly glory.
    1. Gal. 4:17 – They wish for you to seek them.
    2. Gal. 6:12-13
  2. Love lends a helping hand.
    1. Galatians 6:1-5
      1. Restore the one overcome by sin in gentleness.
        1. Gentleness = humility
      2. Restoration is the goal of our involvement.
      3. Be conscious as you lend a hand.
        1. I Corinthians 10:12 - 12Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
      4. Help others through their struggles while bearing responsibility for your own calling.
        1. Burdens – “heavy burdens”
        2. Burden – “soldiers pack”
  3. Love delights in sharing and reaping the rewards. (6:6-10)
    1. “He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully” (2 Cor. 9:6).
    2. Love causes a brother to share with his teacher.
      1. “The laborer is worthy of his hire” (Luke 10:7)
    3. Love endures for the reward of heaven. (6:9)
    4. Love lives for the benefit of others because he is abundantly supplied.
